Coyote in the Rain
So the show went well tonight.
There was a very tiny crowd. My brother asked me if this meant it was mostly little people, but no, it means that it was mostly me and Darby. But a few more did trickle in, so there was that.
But it felt good to sing, really good. Despite the fact that the microphone kept sinking lower and lower on the unsteady boom stand and I kept hunching like I was losing my spine trying to keep up with it.
Anyway.
We recorded this song for you tonight. I named it Coyote in the Rain not because that has anything at all to do with the actual content of the song, but because when we were driving home in the pouring rain tonight I glimpsed a coyote up on a hill, mangy and skinny as ever. And so I said, Look! A coyote in the rain. And we were both psyched.
And then when we were recording this I pretended to call it Coyote in the Rain. We started laughing and that was it; the name stuck.
Who says a title has to have anything to do with the actual song, anyway?

i love this so much! and it’s so cool listening to you play songs with the guitar. wish i could have been there!
wish you could have been there, too, Jenna! guess I just need to play on the east coast real, real soon, huh?
Really good song, Jess. I really wish I could have been there. Listening to it made it worth being up at 4 AM!!!!
aw, poor mom–GO TO BED!!! (but thank you)
I agree with Jenna that it’s cool to listen to you play songs with the guitar. It’s a beautiful song Jess and you guys sound so good together. I’m so glad you were able to sing last night and maybe the small number of people there was a nice thing. Thanks for sharing it : )
Jess!!! I LOVE this song!!! it’s so beautiful and you and Darb sound so beautiful together! and the guitar sounds awesome too! i hope i get to hear you play soon too:)
Jess, what an awesome song! I love the lyrics and you have such an amazing voice.
Oh and this is my first comment on your new web site – love the site. Is there an RSS feed to subscribe too? That seems to be the only way I can catch up on the blogs I love reading these days.
Hey Jamie! thanks! the RSS feed is in the little box that says RSS on the far right of the address, next to the refresh button.
OK OK boo, a tear has just ran down my face! The emotion of this song has touched me, and I can hear it through every note. I love all your music, but this is my FAVORITE! The lyrics are so strong, your voice is awesome, the harmonies beautiful, and I felt it through my soul! That is a hit boo! A Hit I tell you! Such a great song!!!!!!!!!! Wish I was in LA LA LA Land to hear it live!
you’re a multi-talented wonder jessica …and your back up girl is one of my favorites too…whoever was there to hear you two last night probably went home very happy.
isn’t the back up girl wonderful, though?! I love her harmonies–LOVE THEM!!!
thank you, everyone! you guys are, as always, too kind and I love you for it.
I am glad you had a good time singing, Jess. Your comment about the mic was funny, I can just picture it! The song is wonderful (it brought a couple tears to my eyes, I must say), great job (you, too, Darby)! Blessings and Peace,
Kathie
Sounded GREAT!I LOVE IT!!
Jessica, this is my favorite song of yours by far! How inspiring! God bless.
I seem to be a little too dumb for this… All I see is a black box and no music player. Is there supposed to be a music player?
Maybe I’ll try it on another browser tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear it. No doubt you were amazing.
Oh my gosh! It worked this time and it’s AMAZING! I think my favorite one so far.
There are alot of great songs that have titles that have nothing do with them. I read an interview with johnny Reznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, and he said he could not think of a name for Iris. He had been trying for a long time and couldn’t name it. Finally, with 5 minutes left before it would be submitted, he glanced at a newspaper somewhere and saw an advertisement for massage or a stripper or something from a woman named Iris, and he just went with it.
really? that’s so funny! so I guess I don’t need to feel so badly about this title, then:)
I finally got to hear, “Look, a Coyote in the Rain!” I’ll tell you about that someday. Love the lyrics, harmony and the emotion you put to your singing.
